THE PSYCHOLOGY NOVEL

Psychology novels mainly focus on the feelings, thoughts and their inner sense more than their external behaviour. It aims at expressing the inwardness of experience. It strikes us as autobiographical with an infusion of poetic language. Unlike the conventional novels, here the author effaces himself and the narrative progresses in the memory of the characters. The plot is subordinate to and dependent upon the probing delineation of character. Events may not be presented in chronological order but rather they occur in the character's thought, memory, reverie, contemplation and dream.

Some of the works of James Joyce, Virginia Woolf seem to have Psychological elements in it.

THE EPISTOLARY NOVEL

It was one of the early forms of novels to be developed. It is the narrative in the form of letters. Relying on the subjective points of view makes it the forerunner of the modern psychological novel. The best part of this genre is that the readers can get the intense depiction of the characters directly without any second or third party narration. It gives that raw sense to the story. And one of the flaws is that only a limited number of characters could be included.

Samuel Richardson's Pamela is an example of this type.

THE GOTHIC NOVEL

As the name implies, Gothic novels are inspired from medieval buildings and ruins.

This type of fiction has the elements of mystery, horror and terror in it. It was popular during the late 18th century, also having revivals in later periods. It mostly has an eerie tone to it. Supernatural elements, violence and psychological elements play an important role in it.

Novels of Brontë sisters, Edgar Allan Poe have a major influence on this genre.

THE DETECTIVE NOVEL

It is one of the well-known genres of literature. The main plot revolves around a crime and it is solved by an intelligent detective or investigator by a series of events through a gripping storyline with intricate details. Evidence plays a major role in this genre. The gripping narrative, the holding of suspense and engaging the readers till the mystery is solved, the way of solving the mystery, revealing the culprit(s) are some of the key characteristics of detective novels.

Edgar Allan Poe's short story, The Murders in the Rue Morgue(1841) is considered to be one of the first detective stories.

Detective characters like Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Hercule Poirot by Dame Agatha Christie are popular worldwide.

THE SCIENCE FICTION

There are two types of Science Fiction, the one with the absolute fact accuracy and the another with imaginative and innovative futuristic creations that might or might not be invented in the real world.

The works like The Time Machine by H.G.Wells, Frankenstein by Mary Shelly are some of the notable works of Science Fiction.
