THE HISTORICAL NOVEL
As we all know, historical content always holds a major role in storytelling and always has an exciting effect on the audience.
Historical novels, as the name suggests, focus mainly on historical events, people, social conditions and manners. The story takes place in the past. The work may also include historic persons. Even before the coming of the historical novel, writers had used history in their novels. After the Renaissance phenomenon, more writers incorporated historical context in their works.
Accuracy can be considered as the main drawback for this genre as many works have been criticised for its historical inaccuracies.
Some of the notable historical novels include Charles Dickens' 'A tale of two cities' and Leo Tolstoy's 'War and Peace'.
THE SOCIAL NOVEL
Also called a Social problem or Problem novel, the Social novel, as the name suggests, focuses primarily on the social problems which are incorporated through the character in the novel.
Social novels can be divided into two groups,
*The novel of manners, that deals with social behaviour and it's correctness in a given society. The concept of behaviour achieves a great moral effect as Jane Austen's 'pride and prejudice' and 'Emma' are some of the examples and
*The novel of civilization deals with the whole civilization and Charles Dickens' 'Little Dorrit' is a great example of it.
THE PICARESQUE NOVEL
It is one of the early forms of the novel which depicts the narrative of a rogue, lowborn and that person's adventures.
The term 'Picaresque' is derived from the Spanish 'Picaro' meaning an anti-hero or rogue. It is usually an autobiographical account of the hero's fortune and his life, sufferings and wanderings. It is a combination of episodic tales arranged as journeys. These episodes generally depict low life in a rambling manner and come to an abrupt ending.
Henry Fielding's 'Tom Jones', Mark Twain's 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' are some of the examples of this type.
THE STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS NOVEL
Stream of consciousness is a narrative technique used in nondramatic fiction to indicate the flow of inner experience of the flux of thought in man. This type of novel commonly used the narrative techniques of interior monologue. It records the mental activity of a person in all minute details. The working of the mind o a character with all the flaws are shown.
James Joyce's Ulysses, Virginia Woolf's The Waves are some of the examples of it.
THE REGIONAL NOVEL
This is one of the realistic novels. It is the representation of a region or locality or group of characters, local peculiarities their dress, speech and belief are given prominence and are described in a realistic manner.
Maria Edgeworth's Ormond, Arnold Bennett's The old wives tale has the elements of a regional novel.
THE SENTIMENTAL NOVEL
The sentimental novel is a kind of novel that exploits or invokes the sympathy of the readers by presenting a character who undergoes sufferings to preserve their mortality and integrity.
Samuel Richardson's Pamela, Antonie- François
Prévost's Manon Lescaut are some examples
of the genre.
